We can be found in the historic heart (Casco Viejo) of Fuenmayor, approximately 12 km west of Logroño, the capital city of La Rioja province. Fuenmayor is home to around 3,500 residents and covers a vast area that stretches from the Ebro River in the north to the primary motorway and dual carriageway in the south. The Ebro River also marks the border with the Basque Country, our neighbouring province to the north.
Fuenmayor is celebrated for its excellent array of restaurants, eateries, bars, and pubs. The central plaza, Felix Azpilicueta, is well-kept, featuring numerous lime trees and the historic Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María, built in 1560 by Juan Martínez de Mutio. The village offers its own primary and secondary schools, a medical centre, and a variety of retail outlets and supermarkets. Every Friday morning, a market takes place in the main square, where local vendors sell their products.
Winemaking is the primary economic activity in Fuenmayor, which boasts some of the finest Riojan wine cellars (bodegas), many of which originated or maintained a presence in the village. The grape harvest (vendimia) in late September is a particularly bustling time in the community.
